Great post as always. Never underestimate the power of talking to no one and the positive effect that has on generating new ideas from within.
The minute someone asks a question or interjects, it’s now their story, with the narrative bent to suit their agenda. Like dropping the soap in the bath, forget it, that good idea you nearly had is gone. No point scrambling around for it. Be still, then you’ll find it.
For those of us that don’t have the luxury of a podcast for one, do this by sending a voice note to a colleagues or even a voice memo to a fictitious person. You’ll be amazed what comes up in the silence between your stream of conscious thoughts, as without the interruption of someone else. You’ll go places you’ve never been before. The layers of the preverbal onion get peeled like never before.
Out of a 30 minute voice note ramble I’ve had some of the most incredible creative insights I’d never have had speaking to another person. And no, it is not the same as writing it down.
We even have the luxury now of AI writing it up for us and sending it back to us in the form of an Executive Summary.
It’s inspiring stuff dude….It’s given me the push to try something similar. Also, please for the love of god stop holding up books….i’m still on The Second Mountain & Traffic Secrets after you mentioned it the first time, now I’ve got War of Art & Big Magic arriving today 😜
Although already read Surrender experiment and The Creative Act, how do you do it with ADHD though…I’ve a mountain of books unread due to it. I’m great at buying them but reading them is another matter 😢 Although buying the audio print and reading whilst listening really works (expensive though)
Podcast Idea: Perhaps add a ‘books that changed my life’ to an episode. Desert Island Disc stylee 👌🏽I’m sure many would love it
the book thing: i also pile them up, keep buying and not reading.
But then like 2-3 times per year the mood will hit me and ill juist sit down and read a big chunk of one. With the War Of Art it was Blake telling me to take a look at the 3rd section, which was easy for me to focus on.
Basically though im the same, i have piles of books, most unread, but its worth it for the random moment where i feel in the mood and start reading.
And yeah i should do more episodes about books in general for syre
Hah, this is so interesting. I participated in one of your online events, bought a low ticket offer, talked to your brother and now I am here. I love to listen and watch your one take video, because it reminds me of how I work (besides the content, which sometimes resonates sometimes it´s business stuff I am not close to). Not even surprised you come up with personal development offer..:)
I created my Creative Remembering Ritual - an intuitive painting practice for a similar purpose: to dedicate 2 hours to myself, connect to my subconscious and whatever wants to come through me and my body, while making all that visible.
Then - as you said: if it wasn´t for serving others... - I decided to stream it, so now I run it live every Monday here on Substack and I talk on the collective energies (spiritual and astrological context mixed with personal development and transformation), and stay on while I paint for 1,5 hours.
Can´t wait where this process will take you!
Also, my background is in landscape architecture, so I am getting extra happy every time somebody points out the importance of your environment - the actual physical space, which influences the state you are in.
Anyhow, I just got very lit up by you touching on these topics, because I think we are more and more who receive similar messages on what is needed for people in order to find a way back and remember their true self/essence/core and their unique gifts for the benefit of all of us!
That's awesome! We are creating a whole community around that at Eleven Dunbar. Turning The War of Art and The Creative Act a way of being into a community program. Every three months, there is an art exhibition, and you are assigned to your 1:1 Elf accountability buddy, with weekly journal/creative prompts. Plus we visiting artists/practioners who are either further along the way, or can help really tuning into the Sooooourrrcceeeee (where all the donuts live).
Whereas dwarves use the mind for creativity, Elfs (German for eleven hehe) learn to listen to what is trying to be communicated through them, and create from that place.
Thanks man; your podcast btw, has been a huge inspiration and growth space for me. We applied the webinar sales funnel script you shared the other day for our small test-run webinar (which took place yesterday); it was epic.
If you ever wanna jam on how to create a program/workshop around helping people find their real/honest voice and create from that place, let me know!
